The last song we did at Burns Night 2024. (That's our Chaucerian host John McRuddy in the picture). The song is often sung at the end of a gathering of friends and it is reportedly the most popular parting song sung in Scotland before Robert Burns wrote "Auld Lang Syne." Its popularity in Ireland has deeply influenced its sound and led to it being claimed as an Irish folk song. It was definitely not written by Joseph Haydn, as once claimed.

All You Need Is Love

Lucinda (EP) by Peacock's Tale Folk Indie Duo

We were quite close to Lucinda Williams for a while. About ten feet for the duration of her concert at the last-but-one Cambridge Folk Festival before the pandemic in August 2018. This is because Maz is very nippy when it comes to pushing through a crowd to the front. It was a terrific gig (despite a profoundly pissed/off guy on the bus back into Cambridge haranguing everybody it wasn't) but we probably feel closest of all to Lucinda when joining in on her albums (Car Wheels On A Gravel Road; World Without Tears etc) on vocals and dashboard percussion on our way back from the Duck at Stanner in the car.

All The Way To Jackson. Lucinda's original interpretation cleverly hints that maybe she's protesting too much about not missing him. We've gone for a simpler 'yay I'm free of that schmuck' version.

Lake Charles. This elegy reminds us of an old stager we knew at folk clubs, now sadly passed away. We sing it in loving memory of him. We thought about singing 'He had a reason to get back to King's Lynn' but didn't. It might not stop us singing the famous Cash-Carter duet 'as I'm Going To Thrapston.'

Concrete and Barbed Wire. Lucinda's signature take on the self-imprisoning barriers men erect in their relationships with women, much more effective than stone walls (which, as the Cavalier Prisoner of Civil War Richard Lovelace affirmed to his beloved Althea 'do not a prison make'.)

Press Release 

‘Saints and Sinners' is a cover of a folk song by Scots-Canadian David Francey performed live to camera on YouTube from our cottage in Sedgeford. 

“We set up the studio so that everything – voices, harmonies, guitars, percussion – rings out like a bell. In case the audience is in any doubt, we’ve blended some Fring Church bells (as rung on a Sunday morning by our local vicar) into the live mix.” 

The song’s composer won a John Lennon award for songwriting in 2010. The down to earth message of the lyric is that “it’s a long way from heaven to Bethlehem”but with a deep sympathy for “the joy and the sorrow of my fellow man.” Fellow survivors of the early 70s will recognise the nod to Lennonism in the jingly jangly hippy 60s mix. 

The EP covers the 'Christ' and the "Mess' of Christmas with a sonnet set to a drum and bass soundtrack narrating the 'Journey of the Magus' and an a capello cover of the Scots folk song 'The Parting Glass.' This Saints and Sinners motif is further pursued with two gospel covers 'You Gotta Move' and 'Down to the River To Pray'. 

The whole package may be streamed or downloaded from Bandcamp (search for ‘Peacock’s Tale folk indie duo’) and the ‘A’ side viewed on YouTube from December 6.
